In a bid to elevate the global stature of the Tamil language, Tamil Nadu’s government has launched an initiative to feature the best Tamil literary works in prestigious universities and libraries worldwide. This effort is part of a broader mission to promote the rich literary heritage of Tamil, one of the world’s oldest and most classical languages.
Preserving Tamil Nadu’s Rich Literary Legacy
Tamil, often compared with ancient languages like Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Chinese, and Sanskrit, has maintained its vibrancy and relevance over the centuries. This initiative seeks to honour that legacy by ensuring that the most acclaimed Tamil literary works are accessible to a global audience.
Among the works selected are classics such as the Silappathikaram, Manimekalai, Kundalakesi, Valayapathi, Seevaga Sinthamani, and the Five Great Epics of Tamil Literature. Modern works, including novels, short stories, and research papers, will also be included. These texts have been translated into multiple languages over the years, including major world languages and Indian languages, making them accessible to a diverse readership.

Efforts to Promote Tamil Globally
The initiative is being spearheaded by various Tamil Nadu institutions, including the Tamil University, the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation, the International Institute of Tamil Studies, and the Central Institute of Classical Tamil. These institutions have collaborated to identify and select Tamil works that have been translated into other languages.
The goal is to ensure these translated works are prominently featured in the top 100 universities and renowned libraries worldwide. This project is a continuation of Tamil Nadu’s longstanding efforts to promote Tamil literature and culture on a global scale.
Inaugural Meeting and Implementation
The first meeting of the committee responsible for this initiative was held on August 30, 2024, at the Directorate of Tamil Development in Chennai. The committee comprises experts in Tamil literature, translation, and academia, including Dr. V. Irai Anbu, Dr. N. Murugapandian, Dr. S. Ilankumaran, and Andaal Priyadarshini, among others.
During the meeting, the committee decided on the initial list of works to be sent to the global institutions. These works range from ancient literary texts to modern literary collections, reflecting the evolution and richness of Tamil literature.
Selection and Distribution Process
The committee has carefully selected works that have been translated from Tamil into languages such as English, French, German, and Chinese. The chosen works will be distributed to 100 top universities and libraries, showcasing Tamil’s literary and cultural contributions. This effort aims to promote a deeper understanding of Tamil culture, language, and history.
The Tamil Nadu government, through this initiative, seeks to ensure that Tamil literature receives the recognition it deserves on a global platform. The project also aims to foster cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Tamil Nadu and the rest of the world.
