As Ashwini Vaishnaw joins the Modi 3.0 cabinet for his second term as Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, he faces a multitude of pressing issues that require immediate attention.
With his consolidated responsibilities in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the I&B Ministry, one of the most urgent challenges, Vaishnaw needs to tackle is the rise of deepfake technology. These sophisticated manipulations pose significant threats to misinformation and privacy, particularly in political campaigns and public information. He must develop robust regulatory frameworks to combat the misuse of deepfakes and safeguard the integrity of information dissemination.
Another critical issue to mull over is reviewing the minimum age for social media access which his counterparts in Australia have already begun discussing. Amidst growing concerns over the impact of social media on mental health and privacy, especially among minors, establishing age restrictions and stringent verification processes will be crucial in protecting younger users from potential harm.
Data privacy is a global hot-button topic, and India is no exception. As cyber threats and data breaches become more frequent, Vaishnaw must enhance data protection laws and ensure their effective enforcement to safeguard citizens’ personal information.
The rise of artificial intelligence presents both opportunities and challenges. While AI can greatly improve efficiency across various sectors, it also raises ethical concerns and potential job displacements. Vaishnaw needs to navigate these complexities by promoting the benefits of AI while mitigating its risks through thoughtful regulation and policies.
Beyond these issues, other global IT and internet-related challenges are also relevant for India. These include combating online harassment, ensuring net neutrality, and managing digital monopolies. Vaishnaw’s strategic oversight will be essential in shaping a balanced and progressive digital landscape for the country.
Vaishnaw, who also manages the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), signifies a shift towards the integration of these two vital departments. This consolidation is expected to foster better coordination, facilitate comprehensive reforms, and ensure the effective implementation of interlinked policies.
Upon assuming his new role, Vaishnaw reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uplifting the marginalised sections of society, citing recent Cabinet decisions aimed at empowering the underprivileged through initiatives like the construction of three crore rural and urban houses.
“Jai Jagannath! Assumed charge as the Minister of @RailMinIndia, @MIB_India and @GoI_MeitY. Humbled by the responsibility and determined to meet PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s expectations for the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’,” he posted on X.
Joined by L. Murugan, BJP leader and Minister of State for I&B, the duo’s leadership is anticipated to catalyse improved synergy between departments, promoting efficiency in governance and policy execution.
The former IAS officer’s tripartite responsibilities could prove to be a significant advantage, considering his prior experience leading the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology as well as Ministry of Railways. The integration of the I&B and MeitY ministries under Vaishnaw’s leadership is poised to streamline regulatory frameworks, enhance ease of doing business, and ensure robust content regulation across various media platforms.
