WhatsApp with Telegram? Navigating the scam fest on India’s favourite messaging apps

In the digital age, Telegram has become as ubiquitous in India as the debate over whether paneer is better in butter masala or tikka. However, just as every rose has its thorns, every popular app has its scams. And with the sophistication of these digital cons, distinguishing between a prince and a scammer has become as tricky as choosing a favourite between Sachin and Dhoni.

Economic Commission of Africa (ECA) reports indicate a financial holocaust, with losses from identity theft reaching a jaw-dropping $712 billion or Rs 58 lakh crore (after INR conversions and adjusted for inflation) by 2050. Now, while these numbers could make anyone’s wallet clench in fear, let’s navigate the tumultuous waters of Telegram scams with the agility of a Mumbai local train passenger.

Understanding the Landscape

Telegram, in its essence, is like that distant relative who shows up with exciting stories but also brings a lot of baggage. It’s the platform where groups flourish, stickers are a language, and unfortunately, scammers throw a party. The digital bazaars within Telegram’s encrypted walls have become a free-for-all for nefarious activities, much like a chaotic Indian wedding where uninvited guests blend in seamlessly.

To combat all this, the Indian government launched the ‘Chakshu’ platform on Monday, March 4, under the umbrella of ‘Sanchar Sathi‘ to allow users to report suspected scam calls, messages received on Telegram and WhatsApp such as lottery offers, job offers, and even suspected phone number leaks by businesses.

Union IT and Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the Department of Telecom Services has been able to help citizens save around Rs 1000 crore in the last nine months by implementing digital measures to combat fraud and crime, and Rs 1008 crore has been frozen in various bank accounts linked to fraudulent transactions.

“Chakshu is about reporting something which people suspect is fraud,” Vaishnaw said.

Top Telegram App Scams to Watch Out For

Financial Information Theft: Picture this – you’re enjoying a vada pav, and suddenly, a scammer tries to sweet-talk your banking details out of you. A classic move, reminiscent of the “friendly” stranger at the train station.

Impersonation Scams: Ever received a call claiming to be from your bank, but it sounded more like an audition reject from a bad soap opera? Yep, those scammers are trying to play dress-up with your trust.

Investment Scams: These come dressed in the promise of multiplying your money faster than a street vendor slings bhel. A golden rule – if it looks too good to be true, it probably is a scam in shiny armour.

Romance Scams: Love is blind, and unfortunately, so is trust in the digital age. Beware of Romeos and Juliets bearing sweet nothings and siphoning your savings. And stay away from adult pages and accounts on Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram and Threads, scheming their way to your digital wallets.

Telegram’s popularity among scammers can be attributed to a combination of its strong encryption, privacy features, and user-friendly interface, which collectively create an ideal environment for illicit activities.

Here’s a closer look at why Telegram has become a hotbed for scamsters:

End-to-end Encryption: Telegram offers end-to-end encryption in its “Secret Chats” feature, ensuring that only the sender and the recipient can read the messages. While this is designed to protect user privacy, it also makes it difficult for authorities to monitor and crack down on fraudulent activities.

Public and Private Groups: Telegram allows users to create and join both public and private groups with tens of thousands of members. Scammers exploit these features to reach a large audience quickly and efficiently, distributing fraudulent schemes or malicious links with ease.

Anonymity: Users on Telegram can remain largely anonymous, creating accounts with minimal personal information. This anonymity shields scammers from easy detection and allows them to operate without revealing their true identities.

Channels and Bots: Telegram’s channels and bots are powerful tools for broadcasting messages to large audiences. Scammers use channels to spread misinformation or promote scams and bots to automate certain tasks, such as collecting personal information or distributing malware.

Global Reach: Telegram’s global user base provides scammers with a vast and diverse pool of potential victims. They can tailor scams to target users in specific regions, exploiting local trends or events to make their schemes more convincing.

Lack of Oversight: Compared to more tightly regulated platforms, Telegram has been criticized for its relatively lax approach to monitoring content and enforcing community guidelines. This has allowed scam networks to flourish, often without immediate repercussions.

Versatile File Sharing: Telegram allows users to share large files, including documents, videos, and images, directly within the app. Scammers exploit this feature to distribute malicious software or fake documents to support their fraudulent claims.

Diving Into the Digital Thali: UPI Edition

2023 in India wasn’t just about the rollercoaster of cricket matches or the new season of “Sacred Games” but also about the thriller unfolding in the financial sector, starring sophisticated scams with a tech-savvy twist.

India’s financial scam scene saw a lineup of exotic items like QR code scams, part-time job cons promising fortunes for minimal work, and the latest entrée, courier scams, specifically spiced to target the youth. Like an unwanted elaichi (cardamom) in your biryani, malware-driven cybercrimes and tech support scams added bitterness to the digital experience, proving that navigating India’s financial sector is an art in its own right. These scam pitches usually appear randomly on your Telegram and WhatsApp apps and propose unbelievable offers and prizes.

UPI Scams:

Everybody loved the UPI revolution – until they found a scam hidden deep inside it. Fraudsters, ever so creative, crafted schemes that made collect requests look like tempting cashback offers. They wove QR codes into traps and spoofed VPAs, turning a symbol of digital advancement into a double-edged sword.

Fake investment opportunities blossomed like street vendors at a festival, with deceivers setting up shop on Telegram and WhatsApp. These groups became the fishnets, catching unsuspecting investors with the bait of stocks, businesses, or the elusive cryptocurrencies.

The Numbers That Make You Cringe

According to a Forbes report, the fiscal year danced to the beat of over 95,000 reported UPI fraud cases, a jump from the previous session’s 84,000, and a significant portion of them were from Telegram. This statistic served as the unwanted crunch in our samosa, with a whopping 55% of digital payment frauds being attributed to UPI transactions. Imagine, half of these scams were the financial equivalent of paying for a full plate but only getting half.

In a plot twist worthy of a Bollywood drama, 50% of these scams whispered sweet nothings of less than Rs 10,000, luring victims into a false sense of security. Meanwhile, 48% played the long con, involving sums from Rs 10,000 to a staggering Rs 1,00,00,000, leaving only the elite 2% dealing with amounts that could rival a movie’s production budget.

Despite the mix of frauds ranging from UPI shenanigans to bank heists and email scams, the financial toll was no laughing matter, soaring over INR 200 crore in 2023. The twist in the tale? The recovery of these stolen funds was an abysmal 2%-8% finding their way back to the rightful owners.

As we stand amidst the chaos of digital dacoity, the script to safeguard our finances writes itself. It’s a blend of traditional wisdom and modern tech-savvyness. The era of 2023 has taught us the importance of vigilance, making us the proprietors of our financial safety, ensuring that the only scams we enjoy are those unfolding on the silver screen, leaving the real-life thrillers to the heroes in uniform.

How to Overcome These Scams

Storing Sensitive Documents Securely: Imagine your sensitive documents as family jewels, not to be paraded around. The classic Indian parent’s cupboard, under lock and key, is a metaphorical fortress for your documents.

Never Share Passwords or PINs: Sharing sensitive information online is akin to announcing your secret crush at a family gathering – a disaster waiting to happen. Keep those details closer than your deepest Bollywood-inspired fantasies.

Enable Push Notifications on Mobile Phones: This is the digital equivalent of adding masala to your Maggi. It just makes sense. Stay alert(ed), like a cricket fan on match day.

Use Credit Over Debit Cards: Think of your credit card as the Bollywood hero who can handle the drama and fight off the villains (fraudulent charges) without breaking a sweat.

Digital Wallets and Going Paperless: Upgrading to digital wallets is like moving from a scooter to a bike – it’s faster, sleeker, and comes with less hassle. Plus, going paperless is like refusing pamphlets at a traffic signal; it just keeps your life less cluttered.

Destroying Personal Documents: Before you toss old documents, think of them as villains that need to be shredded, a la typical Bollywood climax. Leave no trace behind, not even for the keenest dumpster diver.

Identity Theft Protection Services: Consider services like Aura as your digital Robin to your Batman, offering an extra layer of defence against the dark arts of the digital world.

Conclusion

Navigating through Telegram’s myriad of offerings without falling prey to scams is like threading a needle while riding a rickshaw – possible but requires skill and vigilance. Adopting the practices mentioned above can shield you from digital heartbreak and financial loss. So, arm yourself with knowledge, scepticism, and a good dose of humour, ensuring your digital journey is as scam-free as a meal without extra taxes. Stay alert, stay safe, and let’s keep our finances more secure than our secret snack stashes.
