US basilica reopens after $7.7 million restoration phase

The Basilica of Saint Lawrence in North Carolina completed its first restoration phase to address water leaks and storm damage.

The Basilica of Saint Lawrence in Asheville, North Carolina, reopened on October 10, 2026, following the completion of a $7.7 million restoration phase, according to the Times of India.

The first phase of the project focused on repairing storm damage, stopping water leaks, and protecting the 117-year-old structure. Work included replacing the copper covering on the dome, installing new gutters and storm drains, and repairing cornices.

Crews also restored the dome’s oculus skylight and stabilised masonry above the Marian Chapel. These efforts addressed damage associated with Hurricane Helene, which struck western North Carolina in September 2024.

The basilica, which was completed in 1909, features tile-and-mortar construction designed under Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino Sr. and completed by his son, Rafael Guastavino Jr.

While this phase is complete, the total preservation effort could eventually cost more than $30 million. Future repairs will depend on the progress of subsequent phases and available funding.

Bishop Michael Martin joined parishioners and donors for the reopening ceremony. The basilica's website noted that limited visiting hours remain in place during the ongoing restoration.
