Police detain 36 suspected Bangladeshi nationals in Assam's Dhubri district
The men are suspected of entering India through a border area in Meghalaya before travelling to Dhubri by boat.
Police detained 36 men suspected of entering India illegally at the Jogamaya Ferry Ghat in Assam's Dhubri district on Friday, according to the Hindustan Times.
Dhubri Senior Superintendent of Police Debashish Bora said the operation was conducted following specific intelligence inputs. The men arrived at the ghat by boat at approximately 10.30 am.
Initial investigations suggest the group entered India through the international border in Meghalaya and moved into Assam via the South Salmara-Mankachar district. An investigating officer stated the group entered the country about three days ago and travelled from Hatsingimari towards Dhubri.
The police identified the 36 individuals after screening a boat carrying around 120 people. Officials found that all the men are residents of the Chapainawabganj district in Bangladesh’s Rajshahi Division.
SSP Bora said the motive of the men is not yet known and they are being questioned. Police recovered mobile phones and some documents during the process.
The authorities stated that action will be taken under existing laws. The border department will process their deportation following consultations with the relevant authorities.
