Two passenger boats collide on Brahmaputra river in Assam's Barpeta
Several people sustained injuries after two mechanised vessels carrying more than 100 passengers collided at Bahari Ghat.
Two mechanised passenger boats carrying over 100 people collided at Bahari Ghat on the Brahmaputra river in Assam's Barpeta district, according to the Free Press Journal.
One vessel was travelling from the southern bank of the river toward the ghat, while the second boat was stationary at the location to take on passengers.
The moving boat allegedly lost control as it neared the ghat and struck the stationary vessel, causing panic among those on board.
Several passengers were injured in the accident and were taken to Chenga Model Hospital for medical care.
Allegations have surfaced that neither boat was carrying life jackets, which has raised questions regarding compliance with water transport safety regulations.
The two boats departed from Bahari Ghat shortly after the collision occurred.
