Two foreign nationals electrocuted at Bengaluru hotel swimming pool

Two men died and two others were injured after an electric current was detected in a pool at Conrad Bengaluru on Friday.

Two foreign nationals were electrocuted at the third-floor swimming pool of Conrad Bengaluru in the Halasuru area on Friday evening, according to The New Indian Express. The victims, identified as 57-year-old German Lufthansa crew member Alexander Maximilian Theiss and 45-year-old Slovak IBM project manager Juraj Horvat, died at the spot.

The incident occurred between 5.15 pm and 5.30 pm while the men were swimming. An American tourist, Mathew Desantis, 41, and a hotel pool attendant, Rahul Tiwari, 28, sustained injuries while attempting to rescue the two men. Both were shifted to Manipal Hospital and are reported to be stable.

Silvia Hotuatova, the wife of Juraj Horvat, filed a complaint with the Halasuru police. She stated that she heard screams from the pool area and found her husband motionless in the water. Hotel staff reportedly switched off the power supply and attempted resuscitation before the injured were moved to a hospital by ambulance.

Police have registered a case of death by negligence under Section 106 of the BNS against the hotel management. An officer said that preliminary investigations suggest the victims suffered electric shock while trying to exit the pool and drowned.

The electrical inspectorate will examine the swimming pool's electrical installations and safety arrangements to determine how power leaked into the water. Management at Conrad Bengaluru stated that the cause of the incident has not been established and they are supporting the investigation by local authorities.

Bescom officials clarified that there were no mistakes in the power supply on their part. Officials from the Department of Electrical Inspectorate said they are yet to investigate the matter.
