Delhi CM approves 2,345 additional posts in Delhi Fire Services
The sanctioned strength of the department will increase from 3,096 to 5,441 following the first major cadre overhaul in 84 years.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved the creation of 2,345 additional posts in the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), according to reports by The Hindu and The Tribune. This restructuring will increase the department's sanctioned strength from 3,096 to 5,441.
The new posts will be created across various ranks, including Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Divisional Officer, Assistant Divisional Officer, Station Officer, Sub-Officer, Leading Fireman, and Fire Operator. Support staff positions such as Peon and Gardener will also be added.
Chief Minister Gupta said the decision was necessary to strengthen the fire service due to Delhi's growing population, expanding urban areas, high-rise buildings, and complex infrastructure. She noted that trained manpower and quick response times are essential to protecting lives and property.
The Chief Minister added that the department's responsibilities now include accident response and emergency assistance in addition to extinguishing fires. The Chief Minister's Office said the move will help streamline the organisational structure and improve efficiency during emergencies.
Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood said the restructuring would provide a stronger institutional foundation to help the service respond to emerging safety challenges. The government has not specified a timeline for filling these new positions.
