Distorians cannot erase Indira Gandhi's respect for Patel, says Jairam Ramesh
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh shared a 1947 photograph of Indira Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Saturday.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday shared a rare 1947 photograph of a young Indira Gandhi greeting then Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. According to The Hindu, Ramesh stated that "distorians" cannot remove the deep admiration Gandhi held for the Congress leader.
Ramesh used the platform X to remark that both individuals were indomitable and played significant roles in shaping the history and geography of the subcontinent. He noted that the 151st birth anniversary of Patel, a key architect of India's freedom, was being celebrated.
The shared image depicts a 30-year-old Gandhi greeting the 72-year-old Patel in New Delhi. Ramesh said the photo was captured in early November 1947 at an event held by the Prime Minister for attendees of the International Labour Organisation's Asian Regional Conference.
Ramesh also marked the 42nd death anniversary of Indira Gandhi, describing her as a courageous figure who strengthened India as a nuclear and space power. He credited her with catalysing the Green Revolution during her tenure.
Sardar Patel, born in Nadiad, Gujarat, served as India's first Home Minister and was credited with integrating over 560 princely states. Indira Gandhi, India's first and only woman Prime Minister, was assassinated in New Delhi on October 31, 1984.
