Expert panel to report on unfinished houses in Edamalakkudy

The Idukki District Development Committee has appointed a panel to assess the status of incomplete and damaged homes in the tribal panchayat.

The Idukki District Development Committee (DDC) decided on Saturday to form an expert panel to assess unfinished and damaged houses in Edamalakkudy, the state's first tribal panchayat, according to The Hindu.

The panel, which includes the Finance Officer, PWD Executive Engineer, LSGD Executive Engineer, and a Scheduled Tribes Development department representative, must submit a report within one month after visiting the area.

This follows a technical committee finding that 30 houses had only unusable foundation work completed. A preliminary assessment previously indicated that 12 homes need urgent repairs and 30 require total reconstruction.

The DDC also ordered the removal of the contractor responsible for the 1.3-kilometre road stretch from Pettimudy to Edaliparakudy. The PWD stated a report has been submitted to the court regarding the contractor, who has reportedly failed to finish other district road projects.

During the meeting, officials also resolved to open new quarries to address shortages of granite, sand, and M-sand. The committee decided to expedite inspections of government land identified for quarry sanctions.

Other decisions included repurposing unused government land for public welfare and creating a policy for staff residential quarters near government offices.
