First import container arrives at Vizhinjam International Seaport
The vessel MSC Sabrina III arrived on Saturday carrying a consignment of building boards from Ningbo, China.
The first import consignment arrived at Vizhinjam International Seaport on Saturday, marking a new stage for maritime trade in the state, according to The Hindu.
The container was transported from Ningbo in China aboard the vessel MSC Sabrina III. The shipment was booked by Thiruvananthapuram-based start-up BS2G Logistics and Ship Chandlers Private Limited for the Alteir Group.
The consignment consists of a full container load of engineered building boards, which serve as a substitute for traditional plywood in construction.
With import operations active, containers can be unloaded and moved directly to markets across Keralam. This is expected to lower delivery times and transportation costs for local entrepreneurs by reducing reliance on distant ports.
Authorities stated that the development should create jobs for port workers, warehouse operators, transport operators, freight forwarders, and customs brokers. They added that revenue from logistics and cargo handling will stay within the state.
