Two foreign nationals die in suspected Bengaluru hotel pool electrocution

A German crew member and a Slovakian project manager died on Friday evening during a suspected electrocution incident.

A German national and a Slovakian national died following suspected electrocution in a swimming pool at the Conrad Hotel in Bengaluru on Friday evening. The incident occurred on the third floor of the hotel in the Halasuru area.

The deceased have been identified as 57-year-old Alexander Maximilian Theiss, a Lufthansa crew member, and 45-year-old Juraj Horvat, a project manager with IBM. Lufthansa confirmed the death of one of its crew members during a layover in the city.

Two others were injured while trying to rescue the men. Mathew Desantis, a 41-year-old American tourist, and Rahul Tiwari, a 28-year-old pool attendant and lifeguard at the hotel, were both taken to Manipal Hospital.

Dr Mabel Vasnaik, HOD of Emergency Medicine at Manipal Hospitals, said Theiss was brought dead, while doctors could not successfully resuscitate Horvat. Desantis reportedly felt a current while swimming before returning to safety, while Tiwari jumped in to assist.

Both Desantis and Tiwari are reported to be out of danger and are undergoing treatment. Dr Vasnaik noted that Desantis is stable and Tiwari is also stable, though the latter is undergoing x-rays to check for fractures.

Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident to determine the exact circumstances.
