Government removes petrol export duty and raises diesel, ATF levies
The Finance Ministry has scrapped the special additional excise duty on petrol exports while increasing duties on diesel and aviation turbine fuel.
The central government has removed the special additional excise duty on petrol exports and increased levies on diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) exports, according to notifications from the Finance Ministry. The revised rates, which came into effect on October 31, apply only to exported petroleum products and do not change the duty rates for petrol and diesel used for domestic consumption.
According to reports from Telangana Today and Business Today, the duty on petrol exports has been reduced to zero from the previous Rs 2.50 per litre. Meanwhile, the levy on diesel exports has risen to Rs 11.50 per litre from Rs 8.50 per litre.
The duty on ATF exports has also seen an increase, moving from Rs 10.50 per litre to Rs 11 per litre. These changes are part of a fortnightly review process conducted by the government to respond to fluctuations in international crude oil and refined product prices.
The government stated that these measures aim to ensure sufficient domestic fuel availability by making it less attractive for refiners to divert supplies to overseas markets when export margins are high. The export levies were originally reintroduced in March following geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that caused rises in global crude prices and disrupted energy supply routes.
