Brown mussels sustain livelihoods along Thiruvananthapuram coast

Fisherfolk at Vizhinjam fishing harbour auction daily catches of brown-shelled mussels to support their livelihoods.

Fisherfolk at the Vizhinjam fishing harbour, located nearly 16 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram city, are using brown-shelled mussels to sustain their livelihoods, according to The Hindu.

In the early morning, colourful catamarans powered by motors or wooden oars arrive at the harbour carrying wicker baskets filled with mussels.

The mussels brought to the shore are described as being speckled with dirt and barnacles.

Once the boats reach the shore, labourers carry the overflowing baskets to the centre of the market for auction.

Bidding for the day's catch begins immediately, with one lot eventually fetching ₹15,000.
