IIT-ISM Dhanbad student dies after allegedly jumping from hostel eighth floor

The 21-year-old Petroleum Engineering student was a final-year BTech student from Maharashtra, according to The Tribune.

A 21-year-old BTech final-year student died after allegedly jumping from the eighth floor of an IIT-ISM Dhanbad hostel on Saturday, an institute official said.

The deceased, identified as Mane Prateek Rajkumar, was a Petroleum Engineering student from Ahmedpur in Maharashtra's Latur district, according to The Tribune.

IIT-ISM chief of security Ram Manohar told reporters that the student was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Manohar added that the institute has informed the family of the incident.

A preliminary inquiry involving the student's friends and fellow students suggests the incident may be linked to family-related issues, Manohar said.

Dhanbad Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar told PTI that the deceased's phone has been seized. He stated that the matter is being investigated and the body will be sent for autopsy once the family arrives in Dhanbad.

Another police officer noted that the student's final message to his parents included a request for their forgiveness.
