Jaishankar and Anand discuss Modi's upcoming Canada visit
The ministers met in Atlanta to assess growing cooperation and prepare for the Prime Minister's trip in December.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in Atlanta on Friday, October 30, 2026. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
According to an official statement, the two leaders viewed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled trip to Canada this December as a way to strengthen the ambitious relationship between the two nations. The ministers also agreed to maintain close contact before the visit.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to be in Canada on December 11 and 12. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed these dates, noting that the visit will include stops in Toronto and Ottawa.
Anand had visited India earlier this month to meet Prime Minister Modi. She described those discussions as productive, focusing on ways to enhance ties in energy, technology, and trade.
The diplomatic engagement follows a period of tension in 2023 involving allegations by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India dismissed those claims as absurd.
Relations have seen an upswing since Carney won the parliamentary election in April 2025 and visited India in March.
