Washington Governor Bob Ferguson challenges Microsoft over political ad campaign

Leaked audio from a business summit shows the Governor criticising an ad funded by a PAC that received millions from Microsoft.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson challenged Microsoft during a business summit at the Suncadia resort, according to a report by GeekWire. Leaked audio from the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce’s Regional Leadership Conference shows Ferguson reacting to an ad campaign by a political action committee (PAC).

The PAC, named Washington Needs to Compete, has raised approximately $13.8 million. State campaign finance records indicate Microsoft contributed over $5 million, with additional donations from CEO Satya Nadella, former CEO Steve Ballmer, and President Brad Smith.

The advertisement claims that Olympia is broken and that spending is increasing while residents receive less. It also states that jobs are leaving and housing has become harder to afford. The ad does not name Ferguson or specific legislation.

Ferguson, a former Microsoft attorney, expressed disbelief at the ad's claims during the conference. He questioned the audience on whether they believed the messaging and noted that Seattle-area startups raised a record $3.5 billion in the third quarter, which was significantly higher than the same period last year.

The Governor noted the ads aired during Seattle Seahawks broadcasts on Prime Video and NBC. He suggested that partners should treat each other with more respect and stated he intends to remain governor for a long time while continuing to work with local businesses.

The Washington Observer reported that Microsoft Olympia representative Michael Mattmiller was present at the event and interacted with the Governor afterwards. Mattmiller declined to comment to the newsletter.
