Universities must change their philosophy to manage AI, says IISc Director
Professor Govindan Rangarajan told students at Adani University's third convocation to control AI rather than becoming prompt engines.
Professor Govindan Rangarajan, Director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, spoke at the third convocation of Adani University in Ahmedabad on Saturday. According to The Indian Express, Rangarajan compared Artificial Intelligence to the characters Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde to highlight its dual nature.
Rangarajan said AI can act as a patient personal tutor that explains concepts well, but this means the traditional role of universities in imparting knowledge must be questioned. He stated that social interaction and teacher inspiration are aspects AI cannot capture.
The IISc Director warned students against offloading all their thinking to AI, saying they should not become prompt engines but should instead control the technology. He urged the graduates to cherish human relationships.
Rangarajan also noted that AI is creating bugs at a rapid pace. He mentioned a recent PHP coding glitch that required IISc to take down and patch all its websites, noting that there is currently not enough manpower to fix bugs even with AI tools.
During the ceremony, Adani University conferred 374 degrees in the presence of President Priti Adani. Ten students received academic excellence medals, consisting of five gold, three silver, and two bronze awards.
