NMCG has not allocated funds for new wetland projects in 2026

The National Mission for Clean Ganga is awaiting formal conservation proposals from state governments before releasing any budget for 2026.

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has not yet provided any budget for new wetland conservation projects in 2026, according to an RTI reply reported by Outlook. The mission is currently waiting for state governments to submit detailed proposals for these conservation efforts.

The NMCG stated it is working with Wetlands International South Asia (WISA) and state forest departments to identify, assess, and rejuvenate wetlands within the Ganga basin. While technical reports for wetland inventory and prioritisation studies in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are ready, the study for Delhi is still in progress.

Several projects sanctioned between 2023 and 2025 remain ongoing. In Uttarakhand, a Rs 2.47 crore project for the Asan Wetland in Dehradun has seen Rs 52 lakh released. In Uttar Pradesh, a Rs 5.37 crore project for three priority wetlands has received Rs 3.22 crore.

In Bihar, Rs 72.8 lakh has been released for a Rs 3.51 crore project to manage the Nathmalpur Bhagad Wetland in Bhojpur. Additionally, the NMCG has released Rs 7.70 crore for a Rs 25.89 crore integrated management plan for the Udhwa Lake Bird Sanctuary in Jharkhand.

The mission monitors project progress through field visits and review meetings. Technical reports for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have already inventoried and prioritised various wetlands based on ecological and hydrological characteristics.
