India to begin door-to-door population count on January 25

The digital Census will include a self-enumeration facility starting January 10, 2027, according to a Union Ministry of Home Affairs notification.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has notified that India's door-to-door population count will take place from January 25 to February 28, 2027. This will be followed by a revisional round from March 1 to 5, 2027.

Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan issued the notification stating that a self-enumeration facility will be available from January 10 to January 24, 2027. The reference date for the Census is fixed as midnight of March 1, 2027.

The digital Census will include caste enumeration beyond Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Enumerators will use a 40-question questionnaire that includes 13 new questions covering religion, nationality, digital literacy, banking details, and personal identification documents.

In the poll-bound states of Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Punjab, self-enumeration will be available from November 16, 2026, to January 5, 2027. Door-to-door enumeration in these four states will begin on December 1.

Population enumeration has already been completed in Ladakh and snow-bound areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand as of September 30. The exercise remains deferred indefinitely in Manipur.

The first phase of House Listing Operations began on April 1, 2026, and was completed across the country by September 30, excluding Manipur.
