Investigators suspect power leakage caused fatal incident at Bengaluru hotel pool

Preliminary assessments suggest a short circuit in the pool's internal light wiring may have leaked electricity into the water.

Investigators suspect that power leaked into a third-floor swimming pool at Hotel Conrad from the wiring of the lights inside the pool, according to The Hindu.

The fatal incident occurred on Friday night, leaving two people dead and two others injured.

Scene of Crime officers reported feeling jolts of electricity from the pool water during their visit. An official stated that damage to the light wiring may have caused the leakage and noted that the voltage to the lights may have been higher than the usual 2 to 3 volts.

Gopal B. Hosur, president of the Karnataka Swimming Association, said the accident points to poor earthing and maintenance by the hotel management. He added that there is clear negligence in this case.

The Karnataka Swimming Association has drafted a model Karnataka Swimming Pools Act to standardise safety measures across the state, as no such law currently exists in Karnataka.

The Conrad announced on its website on Saturday that the swimming pool will be closed for maintenance from October 31 to November 30.
