Puthukkad flyover design row intensifies as NHAI rejects pillar-based structure

The Puthukkad Flyover People’s Committee has demanded an independent assessment after the NHAI rejected a pillar-based design on technical and financial grounds.

The Puthukkad Flyover People’s Committee has challenged the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) reported rejection of a pillar-based design for the Puthukkad flyover on National Highway 544, according to The Hindu.

Public Works Minister P.K. Basheer informed the Assembly that the NHAI found a flyover constructed on pillars to be impractical. This was in response to a question raised by Puthukkad MLA K.K.

Ramachandran.

The committee has demanded an independent technical and environmental assessment of alternatives. They argued that the proposed embankment-based design could impact the town’s economy, drainage, and connectivity.

Committee chairman Sebi Kodiyan stated that the embankment could affect accessibility to the railway station, KSRTC bus stand, Fire and Rescue Services station, and the Mini Civil Station.

The group warned that raising the highway with earth could obstruct natural water flow between two rivers and increase flooding in eastern Puthukkad. They also noted that the embankment could affect more than 4,000 traders.

Committee convener K.L. Jaison criticised the NHAI for allegedly ignoring suggestions from the local block and grama panchayats. The committee has sought the disclosure of the NHAI's feasibility report and cost estimates.
