Farmers to stage Jail Bharo protest on November 2 in Belagavi
Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene demand a sugarcane price of Rs 5,500 per tonne.
Farmers in Belagavi will hold a ‘Jail Bharo’ protest on Monday, November 2, at Gurlapur in Mudalgi taluk, according to the Deccan Herald.
Hasiru Sene state president Chunappa Pujeri, who is also with the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, said the protest is due to the state and Central governments failing to meet their demand for a sugarcane price of Rs 5,500 per tonne.
Addressing farmers at Timmapur village in Savadatti taluk on Saturday, Pujeri stated that farmers want prices fixed according to cultivation costs.
He said the group wants sugar factories to set a price of Rs 4,500 per tonne, with the state government providing an additional support price of Rs 1,000 per tonne.
Pujeri claimed that taxes between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000 are collected from the sale and processing of sugar and its by-products, but farmers have not received a share of this.
The leader called Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and Union Food and Civil Supplies Minister Pralhad Joshi ‘lafang’ and said the protest aims to protect farmers' rights.
