Robbery accused escapes from Coimbatore Central Prison

The escape occurred after personnel removed the man's handcuffs during his admission to the prison complex.

A robbery accused, Raghavan, escaped from the Coimbatore Central Prison complex after his handcuffs were removed during admission. The incident follows a previous escape from the Annur police station the previous evening, where he was caught after being chased.

Raghavan, a native of Annur, was being escorted between the two gates of the prison's entrance system when he allegedly broke away and fled. Race Course police have launched a search for him.

The breach occurred despite tightened security measures at the prison. On Wednesday, Central Reserve Police Force personnel conducted a parade with lathis, and staff were directed to carry walkie-talkies and lathis.

Prisoners were instructed to return to their cells by 5.30 pm, which is 30 minutes earlier than the previous schedule. The prison, established in 1872, houses about 2,300 convicts and remand prisoners.

This incident follows an October 26 escape at Theni district jail where 17 remand prisoners fled. Following that incident, Theni Prison Superintendent Nageshwaran was suspended on Friday, and K Shankar was posted as ADGP, Prisons and Correctional Services.
