New cyclonic storm likely to hit Andhra Pradesh coast by November 3

The India Meteorological Department expects the system, named Murasu, to reach the coast as a severe cyclonic storm.

A depression in the Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a severe cyclonic storm and make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of November 3, according to reports from The New Indian Express, Hindustan Times and Mint.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated on Saturday that the system, which may be named Murasu, is moving west-northwestwards at 30 kmph. As of 5.30 pm, the system was located approximately 960 km east-southeast of Chennai and 980 km southeast of Visakhapatnam.

The weather agency expects the system to intensify into a deep depression by midnight on October 31 and a cyclonic storm on November 1. It is forecast to become a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal on November 2 before crossing the coast between Nellore and Narsapur.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the storm is expected to bring wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph. The system may also trigger isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on November 2, and very heavy rainfall on November 3.

In Odisha, the storm could cause heavy to very heavy rainfall in Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam districts on Tuesday and Wednesday. Isolated very heavy rainfall is also predicted for Rayalaseema on November 2 and 3.
