Body of Punjab-origin woman missing for two months found in California canal

The 72-year-old woman, Ajit Kaur, was identified after her remains were discovered by a Turlock Irrigation District employee on October 24.

The body of a 72-year-old Punjab-origin woman who had been missing for two months was found in a canal in California, according to the Hindustan Times.

Ajit Kaur had been missing since August 23, when she left her home at the Casa Grande Apartment complex in Ceres. She was last seen wearing a peach salwar suit with a dupatta.

An employee of the Turlock Irrigation District found the remains on October 24 while patrolling the Lower Lateral 3 Canal near Central Avenue and Keyes Road. Officers confirmed the remains were human and sent them to the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office, where the body was identified on October 27.

The Ceres police department stated that investigators believed Kaur may have entered the Turlock Irrigation District canal located east of her apartment complex. The department had previously requested assistance from the Merced County Sheriff’s Office, which provided a K9 trained to track missing persons.

Police said they had conducted extensive efforts to locate Kaur, including canvassing surrounding areas and searching for surveillance footage. Further investigation into the death is currently underway.
