Dhubri administration begins eviction of 650 bighas of khas land

Nearly 80 per cent of residents had vacated Alamganj Part-IX before the operation started on Sunday, according to The Assam Tribune.

The Dhubri district administration started an eviction drive on Sunday to clear approximately 650 bighas of government khas land in Gauripur’s Alamganj Part-IX. According to The Assam Tribune, nearly 550 families faced eviction during the operation, which began around 7.30 am.

Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath said the administration focused on Alamganj Part-IX because it contains the largest portion of the identified government land. He stated that the total area of khas land was around 800 bighas and the population in the area is between 4,000 and 4,500.

Nath noted that nearly 80 per cent of residents had moved their belongings and left the area before the drive commenced. He said some families had moved to nearby purchased land or to the homes of relatives.

The District Commissioner said the administration followed a three-month procedure involving show-cause notices, hearings, and document examinations. He added that the drive was proceeding peacefully with no significant protests reported.

Nath addressed claims regarding land acquisition through intermediaries by stating that the sale of government land is illegal. He said the administration would take legal action if such allegations are substantiated.

The administration said further action in other areas will depend on the resolution of pending cases in the High Court.
