Malayalam writer R Rajasree discusses gender discrimination and social media writing
The Vayalar Award winner spoke about the challenges women face in literature and the impact of her debut work.
Malayalam writer R Rajasree recently spoke about the challenges women face in literature and the role of social media in providing a space for female expression, according to The New Indian Express.
Rajasree, who won the Vayalar Award for her work ‘Athreyakam’, said that social media provides a forum for women to speak when they feel unhappy or stressed.
Her debut work, ‘Kalyaniyennum Dakshayaniyennum Peraya Randu Sthreekalude Katha’, began as quotes on Facebook before evolving into a novel.
The writer noted that women often face gender discrimination in literary circles, where they are sometimes accused of being merely emotional writers.
She stated that women often have to work harder than men to be accepted, while men are frequently called extraordinary for casual comments.
Discussing her characters, Rajasree said she merged traits from many people she has known into the character Kalyani, who questions priorities and overcomes crises.
