Bihar Museum ranked first in Asia in global list

The museum in Patna secured the ninth position globally in a list published by travel guide Worth a Journey.

The Bihar Museum has been ranked ninth globally and first in Asia in a list of the “World's 100 Best Museums” published by the travel guide Worth a Journey, according to The Indian Express.

The museum, located on Bailey Road in Patna, is the only institution in Asia to secure a position in the top 10. The guide evaluated institutions based on cultural value, infrastructure, visitor experience, and accessibility.

Director General of the Bihar Museum Anjani Kumar Singh told The Indian Express that the ranking was based on social media reach and visitors' reactions. He said the magazine neither asked for an entry nor spoke to the museum.

The museum became fully operational in 2017 and covers 13.9 acres with a built-up area of 273,500 square feet. It features galleries for ancient sculptures, children, and regional folk art.

The facility traces history from the Stone Age to modern times using coins, manuscripts, and sculptures. It also hosts literary activities such as book launches, seminars, and a literature festival.

The project was a dream project of former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. While the initial sanctioned cost was Rs 498 crore, an additional Rs 542 crore was approved for an underground heritage tunnel linking the museum with the old Patna Museum.
