Police officer booked for allegedly helping rape accused escape in Ahmedabad

Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajesh Dayaram and accused Radhe Thakkar are absconding after the prisoner escaped from custody.

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) has been booked for allegedly facilitating the escape of a rape accused from police custody in Ahmedabad, according to The New Indian Express and Times Now.

The accused, identified as Radhe alias Gopal Rajubhai Thakkar, was being escorted back to Sabarmati Central Jail on October 29 after being discharged from Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

ASI Rajesh Dayaram was assigned to escort Thakkar along with constable Mahesh Hindubhai, but the ASI allegedly claimed the accused was a relative and left with him alone in an autorickshaw.

The ASI reportedly told the police control room at 7:49 pm that Thakkar escaped near Dudheshwar Circle during a traffic jam, but later told Madhavpura Police that the escape happened near Nirant Crossroads while heading towards Vastral.

Armed Police Inspector B.D. Kotad filed a complaint at Ramol Police Station against both Dayaram and Thakkar for negligence and facilitating the escape.

Ramol Police Inspector S.N. Chudasama confirmed that both the ASI and the accused are currently absconding as investigations continue.
