The internal boundaries of India have undergone several changes through multiple phases of reorganising States, according to The Hindu.
On the appointed day of the Indian Independence Act, 1947, British paramountcy lapsed, leading to the formation of two independent dominions, India and Pakistan.
Before August 15, nearly 114 of the more than 550 scattered princely states had joined India through the Instrument of Accession.
The remaining princely states had the choice to join either India or Pakistan, though most decided to accede to India.
As India completes 79 years of independence, the country now consists of 28 States and eight Union Territories.
