Digi Yatra begins international passenger trials at seven Indian airports
Eligible Indian nationals with e-passports can test the digital travel facility on select Air India and IndiGo international flights.
Digi Yatra has started trials for international passengers at seven airports in India, according to a report by The Times of India. The trials are being conducted at Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai, and Amritsar airports.
The pilot programme is scheduled to run from November to December 2026. It allows eligible Indian nationals holding e-passports to use the service at terminal entry points, Security Hold Areas (SHA), and boarding gates where infrastructure exists.
To use the facility, passengers must create an e-passport-based Verifiable Credential (VC) via the Digi Yatra mobile application. This involves scanning the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) of the e-passport, using Near Field Communication (NFC) to read the chip, and capturing a selfie.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation stated that the facility is meant to complement rather than replace existing travel processes. Passengers are still required to carry travel documents and complete all immigration procedures and airline document checks.
The platform currently serves more than 26.5 million users and has facilitated over 110 million journeys across 39 domestic airports. Feedback from these trials will be used to plan a wider rollout in 2027.
