Karnataka increases milk prices by Rs 8 per litre from November 1

The price revision aims to support dairy farmers facing drought and rising input costs, according to the state government.

Milk and dairy product prices in Karnataka will increase from Sunday, according to The New Indian Express. The Karnataka Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (KMF) announced that milk prices will rise by Rs 8 to Rs 12 per litre, depending on fat content.

The price of toned milk will increase from Rs 46 to Rs 54 per litre, while homogenised milk will rise from Rs 47 to Rs 56. Special toned milk and Shubham milk will increase from Rs 52 to Rs 64. The cost of ghee, butter, and buttermilk will also rise based on fat content.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stated the revision was necessary to protect the livelihoods of dairy farmers. He said Rs 7 of the hike will go to producers and Re 1 will go to milk unions for operational expenses. This will raise the procurement price for farmers from Rs 35 to Rs 42 per litre.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said the Cabinet took the move unanimously following demands from farmers and unions. He noted that milk in Karnataka stood at Rs 46 per litre, while the national average is around Rs 57 per litre.

The government cited rising cattle feed, fodder, fuel, and packaging costs, alongside a decline in milk procurement due to drought. KMF data shows that 1.05-1.08 crore litres of milk are procured daily in the state.
