Kerala power crisis will be resolved, says Electricity Minister

Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph said the state government is exploring alternative arrangements to meet electricity demand after an agreement with Himachal Pradesh ended.

Kerala Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph said on Sunday that the state is facing a power crisis but expressed confidence that it will be resolved. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Joseph stated that the state government is looking into alternative arrangements to meet electricity demand.

According to The Hindu, Joseph said the state had been procuring electricity from Himachal Pradesh under an agreement that ended on October 31. He noted that the government is currently considering next options.

The Minister said he had discussed the matter with Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and that steps are being taken to overcome the shortage. He added that power availability would improve when rainfall increases in North India, which would help the state secure electricity.

Kerala has been experiencing a power shortage due to increased electricity consumption and deficient monsoon rainfall.
