US Senator Chris Murphy hospitalised after suffering a stroke
The Connecticut Democrat is responding well to treatment and is expected to make a full recovery, according to his chief of staff.
US Senator Chris Murphy was hospitalised after suffering a stroke on Saturday afternoon, according to reports by the Times of India and Times Now. The 52-year-old Connecticut Democrat began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game.
Chief of staff Allison Herwitt said in a statement that Murphy was taken to a local hospital where doctors diagnosed the stroke. He was subsequently transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring.
Herwitt stated that Murphy is awake, alert, and responding well to treatment. She added that doctors are encouraged by his progress and the team is optimistic he will make a full recovery.
Murphy had been travelling to Michigan, Minnesota, and Florida to campaign for Democratic candidates. He was scheduled to attend campaign events in New Hampshire on Sunday, which are likely to be affected by his hospitalisation.
The senator serves on the Senate Foreign Relations and Appropriations committees. He recently spoke at a Middle East Institute event in Washington on Wednesday, where he criticised reported plans for a military offensive against Iran.
