Water ingress reported on Navy ship INS Kesari at Visakhapatnam

The Indian Navy confirmed that no casualties or injuries occurred during the flooding incident on the Shardul-class vessel.

The Indian Navy confirmed on Saturday that the Shardul-class tank landing ship INS Kesari experienced water ingress while berthed at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. According to reports from The Times of India and The Pioneer, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Eastern Naval Command stated on social media that no loss of life or injuries were reported. The Navy has not indicated that any personnel were in danger during the event.

Efforts to pump the water out of the vessel are currently in progress. The ship was stationary in the dockyard at the time of the incident rather than being deployed at sea.

INS Kesari was commissioned on April 5, 2008, and has a 5,650-tonne displacement. The vessel is approximately 125 metres long and is capable of carrying about 500 personnel.

The ship has previously been used for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. In May 2020, it delivered medical assistance, food, and Covid-19 relief materials to nations including Maldives, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros, and Seychelles.
