India becomes first team to hit 400 sixes in 40 T20Is

The team achieved the milestone in 2026, marking a 38.4 per cent increase in sixes compared to 2022.

India has become the first team to hit 400 sixes in 40 T20I matches, according to a report by the Times of India. The milestone was reached in 2026 when Naman Dhir hit a six against New Zealand.

The team hit 289 sixes in 40 T20Is in 2022. The current figure represents a 38.4 per cent increase. Of the 400 sixes hit in 2026, 142 were scored against New Zealand.

India's six-hitting contributed to a 3-2 series win against New Zealand, where Indian batters hit 142 sixes compared to 61 from the opposition. Abhishek Sharma led the six-hitting with 86, followed by Ishan Kishan with 60 and Sanju Samson with 50.

Powerplay hitting has also increased, with India smashing 145 sixes in the first six overs. Across 40 matches, Indian batters have scored 2,681 runs in 239 overs at a strike rate of 189.96.

Power-hitting coach Julian Wood said India is approaching T20 cricket differently by mastering skills instead of just managing risk. He noted that India likely has the largest pool of T20 players in the world.

Sunrisers Hyderabad batting coach Hariesh Jaikumar said the quality of batting has improved significantly and players are playing fearless cricket without previous inhibitions.
