Afghanistan reach sixth position in ICC Men's ODI rankings

The team has overtaken Sri Lanka to achieve its highest-ever standing in the 50-over format.

Afghanistan have climbed to sixth place in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, marking their best-ever position in the format, according to reports from The Assam Tribune, ANI and The News Mill.

The team moved past Sri Lanka to enter the top six, having previously overtaken Bangladesh, England and the West Indies. Since their ODI debut in 2009, Afghanistan have won 96 of their 191 matches, maintaining a win-loss ratio of 1.09.

This rise follows several strong performances, including a 4-0 series win against Ireland and an undefeated run in a recent tri-series involving Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. The team also recorded landmark wins against Pakistan and Sri Lanka during the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

The Afghan side has also maintained momentum in T20Is, completing a 3-0 series whitewash against Zimbabwe. In the final match in Sharjah on Sunday, spinner Noor Ahmad took 5/13 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 79.

Afghanistan secured a seven-wicket win in that final match, with Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai remaining unbeaten. The team is scheduled to play a two-match Test series against Zimbabwe next.
