Assam administration reclaims 650 bighas of land in Dhubri district

The eviction drive in Gauripur circle targeted alleged encroachments on government khas land and affected approximately 550 families.

The Assam government launched an eviction drive on Sunday to clear 650 bighas of land in the Alamganj Part-9 area of Gauripur circle in Dhubri district, according to ThePrint and The Sentinel.

Dhubri District Commissioner (DC) Dibakar Nath said the administration identified 800 bighas of government khas land under encroachment involving around 800 families.

The operation focused on 650 bighas because approximately 150 bighas involving 150 to 160 petitioners are currently subject to court cases or mediation, Nath said.

The administration evicted around 550 families during the process, which used 50 excavators, tractor-trolleys, and several thousand police and civil personnel.

Nath stated that the drive was peaceful, noting that 80 per cent of residents had moved their belongings before the operation began.

Regarding the mazar and graveyard, the administration held discussions with a local committee and will follow legal procedures for any future dismantling.

The DC said that while rehabilitation is not standard for encroachers, Boyjer Alga and Chirakhowa have been identified as sites for interim relief for those left landless.

Further action regarding the disputed lands will depend on the Gauhati High Court order scheduled for November 13, 2026.
