Central University of Punjab and CGWB to study uranium in groundwater

The institutions signed a memorandum of understanding to investigate contamination in Bathinda and Goniana Mandi blocks under the NAQUIM programme.

The Central University of Punjab and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Chandigarh, have partnered to investigate uranium contamination in groundwater within the Bathinda and Goniana Mandi blocks, according to The Tribune.

The two organisations recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to conduct a detailed assessment of groundwater quality. This study aims to identify contamination-prone areas and suggest measures for safe drinking water under the National Aquifer Mapping and Management (NAQUIM) programme.

The CGWB will collect groundwater samples during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods to analyse them for uranium, major chemical components, and other heavy metals. The board will also monitor groundwater levels and map contaminant distribution.

The university will perform mineralogical and geochemical studies to understand groundwater composition and the factors causing uranium contamination. It will also conduct health risk assessments and examine mitigation measures to minimise risks.

The MoU was signed in the presence of acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Ramakrishna Wusirika and CGWB North Western Region Regional Director Nidhish Verma. University Registrar Dr Vijay Sharma and nodal officer Prof JK Patnaik signed for the university, while Scientist-C Kuldeep Gopal Bhartariya represented the CGWB.
