Tamil Nadu CM forms committee to strengthen prison security
The high-level committee, led by former DGP J.K. Tripathy, will investigate security lapses following the escape of 17 inmates from Theni prison.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has formed a high-level committee to recommend ways to bolster security in prisons across the state, according to The Hindu. The move follows a review of prison security after 17 inmates escaped from the Theni district jail on October 26.
The committee is chaired by former Director General of Police (DGP) J.K. Tripathy. Other members include Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Prisons and Correctional Services K.
Shankar and former Deputy Inspector General of Prisons S. Rajendran.
The group will investigate the causes of the recent escape and look into how security is managed in other parts of India and abroad. Their task includes reviewing current prison layouts, existing protocols, technical deficiencies, and how staff are assigned to duties.
The 17 remand prisoners who escaped under the cover of darkness were caught within 42 hours during a search involving drones and police teams. They were detained in Thekkampatti jail and are expected to be moved to central prisons in Palayamkottai, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, and Salem.
The Chief Minister has stated that strict action will be taken against any officials found to have neglected their duties. The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the government at the earliest.
