Tamil Nadu CM forms high-level committee to review prison security lapses

The committee, led by former police chief JK Tripathy, will investigate recent prisoner escapes and suggest measures to strengthen state prison security.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered the formation of a high-level committee to investigate security failures in state prisons, according to BusinessLine.

The move follows recent incidents where prisoners escaped from facilities in Tamil Nadu. The committee aims to recommend ways to bolster prison security and prevent future escapes by studying practices used within India and abroad.

Former Director General of Police JK Tripathy will chair the committee. He will be joined by K Shankar, the Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, and former Deputy Inspector General of Prisons S Rajendran (Retd) as members.

The group will examine current security structures, technology gaps, manpower deployment, and existing operating procedures. A government statement said the committee will conduct a detailed enquiry into the lapses that allowed recent escapes.

The committee is expected to submit its report and recommendations to the government at the earliest.
