Cyclone Murasu triggers heavy rain alerts in Odisha and Nagarkurnool

Authorities in Odisha and Nagarkurnool have issued weather warnings as the cyclone approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Cyclone Murasu is expected to complete landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast by Tuesday morning, triggering heavy rainfall and wind warnings in Odisha and Nagarkurnool, according to reports from Pragativadi and Urban Acres.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued a state-wide warning for heavy rain and squally winds in Odisha. Southern districts including Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam are under a yellow warning for heavy to very heavy rain.

In Nagarkurnool, the district administration has placed the area under an orange alert from 8.30 am on November 2 to 8.30 am on November 3. District Collector Hemanta Keshav Patil has urged residents to follow India Meteorological Department (IMD) advisories and avoid unnecessary travel.

The Nagarkurnool administration advised people to stay away from trees, electric poles, and hoardings due to expected winds of 60–90 kmph. Residents in low-lying areas and those with livestock were also told to take precautions.

In Odisha, Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, said daytime temperatures will remain mostly stable, but night temperatures may drop by up to 3°C below normal starting November 5. The state government has accelerated evacuation procedures in vulnerable low-lying areas.

Rainfall is expected to continue in Odisha on November 3 and 4, before the system weakens by November 5 as it moves away from the Odisha-Andhra border.
