Two foreigners die of suspected electrocution at Bengaluru hotel pool

An American tourist and a hotel lifeguard were injured while attempting to rescue two men from a swimming pool on Friday.

Two foreign nationals died following suspected electrocution in a swimming pool at the Conrad Bengaluru on Friday evening, according to The New Indian Express. The incident occurred between 5:15 pm and 5:30 pm at the five-star hotel located on Kensington Road in the Halasuru area.

The deceased have been identified as Alexander Maximilian Theiss, a 57-year-old German Lufthansa Airlines crew member, and Juraj Horvat, a 45-year-old Slovakian project manager with IBM. Both men died on the spot.

An American tourist, Mathew Desantis, 41, and a hotel pool attendant and lifeguard, Rahul Tiwari, 28, sustained injuries while attempting to rescue the victims. Both were shifted to Manipal Hospital and are reported to be out of danger.

The Halasuru police have registered a case of death by negligence under Section 106 of the BNS against the hotel management. A complaint was filed by Silvia Hotuatova, the wife of Juraj Horvat, who heard screams from the pool area.

An officer stated that preliminary investigations suggest the victims suffered electric shock while trying to exit the pool and drowned. The electrical inspectorate will examine the pool's electrical installations and safety arrangements to determine how power leaked into the water.

Conrad Bengaluru expressed sadness over the incident and stated that the cause has not been established. The hotel said it is offering full support to the investigation being conducted by local authorities.
