Delhi turns back 714 vehicles on first day of BS-VI curbs

Enforcement teams impounded 38 end-of-life vehicles as winter pollution control measures began in the national capital on Sunday.

Enforcement teams comprising 250 officials from the Delhi Police and Delhi Transport Department were deployed across the national capital on Sunday to restrict non-BS-VI vehicles. According to The Indian Express, 7,249 vehicles were checked, resulting in 714 vehicles being turned back and 38 end-of-life vehicles being impounded.

A senior police official said that very few vehicles were challaned on the first day because the main aim was to spread awareness about the new restrictions. At the Ghazipur crossing, a Transport Department sub-inspector said that most vehicles registered outside Delhi were asked to return if they did not meet BS-VI emission standards.

At the Singhu border, officers turned back several trucks and four-wheelers, including a JCB crane that met only BS-III standards. An officer at Singhu said the primary focus was on advising people, though general challans were issued alongside PUC fines.

At Anand Vihar ISBT, a traffic police official reported that about 30 challans had been issued by 2 p.m., with roughly half being for PUC violations. At Nand Nagri, an official stated that about 40 challans had been issued by 3 p.m.

Traffic officers at the Uttar Pradesh border described thin staffing, with one officer noting that they were only two people managing four open lanes. Officials said the shortage of personnel was because the Congress rally at Ramlila Maidan had pulled many traffic teams away from the borders.
