French bond yields remain steady after Fitch outlook downgrade
Investors monitored political uncertainty and Middle East developments as the 10-year government bond yield held at 4.97 per cent on Monday.
French government bond yields showed little change on Monday, according to The Economic Times, following a warning from Fitch Ratings. The agency revised the country's outlook to negative from stable after the market closed on Friday.
Fitch stated that political fragmentation and a declining fiscal position in France are making it harder to stabilise public debt. The agency highlighted increasing worries regarding the nation's public finances.
Despite the revision, the 10-year government bond yield remained at 4.97 per cent during early Monday trading. Eurozone government bonds also stayed broadly stable, while Germany's 10-year benchmark yield held at 3.33 per cent.
French borrowing costs have faced pressure recently due to domestic fiscal issues and a global bond selloff. Reuters reported that France's 10-year bond yield reached 5.14 per cent last month, the highest since 2002.
In energy markets, Brent crude futures traded near $110 a barrel, down from recent highs of nearly $118. European natural gas prices also fell by almost 2 per cent on Monday.
Investors are expected to continue watching French fiscal policy and domestic politics, alongside geopolitical tensions and energy market trends, to assess the outlook for European government bonds.
