DIPR must improve news delivery and promote Manipuri language, says official

Advisor to the Chief Minister Oinam Sunil Singh urged the department to strengthen timely information dissemination and regulate digital media.

The Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) must strengthen timely news dissemination and promote the Manipuri language, according to Oinam Sunil Singh, Advisor (Media) to the Chief Minister. Singh was speaking on Sunday at the 78th Information and Public Relations Day celebration in Imphal.

The event was held at the DIPR auditorium at Nityaipat Chuthek. Singh said that improving the speed of news delivery would allow press media to access government information promptly and provide wider coverage.

Singh emphasised that the Directorate should strengthen news dissemination in Manipuri alongside its English activities. He noted that Meiteilon serves as a common medium of communication for the 36 communities of Manipur.

The Advisor also urged officials to formulate a digital media policy. He suggested introducing a system to register digital media organisations under the Directorate to ensure better regulation and recognition.

Secretary (IPR) Neeta Arambam said the department's primary responsibility is to ensure authentic government information reaches citizens quickly and accurately. She noted that in the digital age, information can travel globally within seconds.

Arambam also highlighted the history of the Directorate, which was established in 1949 and upgraded to a Directorate in 1974. Its activities were expanded to different district headquarters in 1975, according to The Hawk.
