Karnataka government considers official status for Kannada flag
Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the state will discuss a legal framework to hoist the red and yellow flag alongside the national flag.
Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced on Sunday that the state government is considering granting official recognition to the red and yellow Kannada flag. Speaking during Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said the government intends to create a legal framework to allow the flag to be hoisted alongside the national flag on government buildings.
According to reports from The News Mill and Deccan Herald, the Chief Minister plans to bring the matter for discussion during the upcoming legislature session in Belagavi. He stated that the government aims to ensure the flag, which represents the self-respect of Kannadigas, is displayed on every building where the national flag is hoisted.
Shivakumar noted that the state Cabinet had previously decided on the issue and sent a request to the Union government, but recognition was not received. He described the flag as a symbol of the state's culture, religious harmony, and knowledge heritage, comparing its importance to the state anthem.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that he would not attend the INDIA bloc rally in Delhi due to commitments regarding the Rajyotsava celebrations. He has instead directed district ministers and MLAs to organise local programmes and hoist the national flag across their constituencies.
The winter session of the Karnataka legislature is set to take place at the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi from November 30 to December 11. The proposal will undergo discussion during this period, followed by a Cabinet decision and the introduction of the proposed legal framework.
