Eight people remain missing in Uttarakhand's Kedartal after avalanche

Two helicopter searches failed to find the group or their tents due to heavy snowfall and the risk of further avalanches.

Eight people, including seven trekkers and a guide, are still unaccounted for in the Kedartal region of Uttarkashi as of Sunday, according to The Times of India.

The group, which includes five individuals from West Bengal, two from Uttar Pradesh, and a guide from Uttarkashi, has been missing for three days since an avalanche blocked their path.

The missing trekkers were identified as Tapas Bauri, Ratan Ghosh, Manoj Khovas, Rintu Mandal, and Uday Ghosh from West Bengal, alongside Deepika Verma and Vartika Verma from Uttar Pradesh, and guide Siddharth Rana.

Gangotri National Park deputy director Mayank Garg stated that rescue teams have found no trace of the eight people despite ongoing efforts.

The group departed from Gangotri for Kedartal on October 27 and was stranded after an avalanche hit the trekking route on October 29.

While four porters returned safely to Gangotri, the trekking agency Soul Seekers said heavy snowfall on October 29 prevented the others from returning. The agency's own rescuers spotted a tent but could not reach it due to deep snow and avalanche risks, while two helicopter sorties on Sunday failed to locate the group.
