Police officer killed as truck allegedly carrying illicit liquor runs him over
Sub-Inspector Dilip Puri died on the Harda-Nemawar highway during an attempt to intercept a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal alcohol.
A police officer was killed late on Sunday night after a truck, which was allegedly transporting illicit liquor, ran over him in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district, according to The Pioneer.
Dilip Puri, a 2007-batch Sub-Inspector and the station in-charge of Khategaon police station, died on the spot on the Harda-Nemawar highway.
The incident occurred while Puri was part of a police operation to intercept a vehicle suspected of moving illegal alcohol from Harda to Gujarat through Indore.
Dewas Superintendent of Police (SP) Aditya Mishra had formed more than five teams, including personnel from Kannod, Satwas, and Khategaon, to stop the vehicle using barricades.
Reports indicate that the truck driver had stopped to drink water when Puri arrived to apprehend him. A scuffle allegedly broke out after Puri ordered the driver to get down, and the driver then tried to flee with the vehicle.
The driver, identified as Rahul Jaiswal of Harda, has been arrested and the truck, registration number MP 43 H 4786, has been seized. Police are investigating the circumstances of the death and the smuggling network.
